What is Social Emotional Competence?

Social emotional competence (SEC) is vital to child development. Social emotional competence has many moving parts and features, but can for example include children’s friendship and other close relationship skills, how children understand their own and others’ emotions, as well as ways that children solve their own social problems and way that they guide their own behavior and goals.

A New Study…

New research funding was just provided from FORTE to study the social emotional development of a group of Swedish children who took part, as 4 and 5 year olds, in a social emotional learning program called preschool Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies (PATHS). This new study checks back in with this group of children a few years later when they are 12-13 years old.

Interventions are wonderful when they can help in the short term, but it is also important to development interventions, like social emotional competence interventions, that show long lasting benefits. This new follow up study on PATHS advances this aim.

We are looking to hire a research assistant for the New PATHS Study, please click on the Link below to learn more…
